Full description

PIERRE FREYER (Biographical dara unknown)

Red light district, 1937
indian ink and watercolor/paper 52,5 x 34 cm
signed Pierre Freyer, dated 1937

SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 2000 - 3000
STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 2000

Pierre Freyer was a painter and graphic artist whose central theme was people in general, depicted as children, musicians, passers-by and nudes, mostly in bold colours. Later, he also turned his attention to still lifes. From 1920 to 1923, he studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts under G. Rudnay, but did not graduate. Between 1923 and 1925, he lived in Vienna and was represented in group exhibitions in 1925, including at the Heller Gallery. In the same year, he moved to Paris, where he exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne. His works were shown in Austria, France and Germany, among other places, including the jury-free art show in Berlin. He was a member of the Berlin ‘November Group’ and, from 1929, was active in the Hagenbund, to which he belonged from 1932 to 1938. In 1939/1940, he moved to Toulouse, and in 1942 he emigrated to the United States, where he became a member of the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors and developed a lively exhibition activity. In 1959, he founded the Hudson Guild Art Project in New York, which he directed for many years. In 1980, a memorial exhibition was dedicated to him at the Hudson Guild Art Gallery. His works can be found in important collections such as the Belvedere and the Albertina in Vienna, the Stadtmuseum Jena, the Jewish Museum New York, the Musée national d'art modern in Paris and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (printmaking). Further artists and styles: Aristide Maillol, New Objectivity, Richard Schreiber, Erwin Vollmer, Albert Birkle, Karl Nolde, Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke
PLEASE NOTE:
The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items.
The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
