This exceptionally rare occasional poem has an intriguing background. The enthusiastic words were likely prompted by relief at the addressee’s resignation from the editorship of Tudományos Gyűjtemény, to which Vitkovics himself had contributed. A few months earlier he had complained to Kazinczy: “At our gatherings you must have heard: ‘We must accept this work too, because he is a priest, a baron, a Catholic, a Protestant, a professor, a youth, a man of means, because he gathered so many subscribers’.” No trace of this occasional poem appearing at auction.
