Full description

FRITZ MÜHSAM (Hamburg 1880 - 1946 Paris)

Still life in the artist's studio, 1928
oil/canvas 100 x 80 cm
signed Mühsam, dated 28

SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 3000 - 5000
STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 3000

Fritz Mühsam was born on December 5, 1880, in Hamburg. He spent his youth in Berlin, where his father owned an oil paint factory. There, and later in Munich, Fritz Mühsam studied painting. After his studies, he lived as a freelance artist in Berlin and also maintained a studio in Fischerhude, which he visited during the summer months. His work mainly consisted of portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. In 1927, he participated in the group exhibition *"European Art of the Present"* in Hamburg. He was also a full member of the German Artists' Association (Deutscher Künstlerbund), with which he exhibited three times between 1928 and 1931, although he was only listed as a member until 1929. In 1931, Mühsam gave up his apartment in Berlin and moved to Paris, where he also taught. For this reason, he is also known as Frédéric H. Muhsam. In the summer, he continued to work in Fischerhude. During the 1930s, he became closer to the Garman-Epstein family. Two portraits of Esther and Theo Garman, painted by Mühsam in 1934, are now in the collection of the New Art Gallery Walsall. During World War II, Mühsam was interned in France. He died of a heart attack in Paris in 1946.
PLEASE NOTE:
The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items.
The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
