Helmut Heuberger war ein österreichischer Zeichner und Maler. After the Gymnasium (high school), an education which was interrupted by anti-aircraft helper service, and after his Matura, Helmut Heuberger studied German and English at the University of Vienna. In 1949, he received his doctorate in philosophy. As a member of a choir, he travelled to the USA for about a year. After returning to Vienna, he worked as a bank clerk until his retirement. Heuberger was self-taught as a painter and draftsman, he had been painting since his youth and used it to finance most of his studies. From the 1960s onwards, Heuberger became more intensively involved with visual art. In 1966, he had his first solo exhibition at the Peithner-Lichtenfels Gallery in Vienna, at that time a leading address in Vienna for exponents of the “Vienna School of Fantastic Realism”, by which he was also influenced. Over the years, Heuberger developed a very personal “handwriting”, the spatial-tectonic structure of the image content was just as important to him as the color texture of surfaces. His picture themes are landscapes, houses or groups of houses, still lifes, occasionally portraits and animals. His oeuvre includes several hundred images of graphics (pencil, charcoal, coloured pencil, etching and engraving), gouaches and oil paintings. In 1999, after the death of his wife Gertrude Heuberger, née Bishop, who had shielded her husband from all the inconveniences of everyday life, Heuberger lost the will to live, he died two years later. Heuberger has had solo exhibitions in Austrian and German galleries and also participated in exhibitions in Austria, Europe and overseas.
