Gábor Döbrentei (1785–1851), writer, poet, and translator. Autograph letter addressed „Érdemes barátom” (My worthy friend).
The recipient was Rudolf Czüllich (later Czélkúti), a sculptor who lived in Rome from 1840. Visiting him there, Lajos Gyulay called Döbrentei’s attention to the needy but talented young artist, whom he supported and for whom he secured several commissions from the National Sculpture Society. He even advised him to Magyarize his name.
This letter deals in detail with practical and financial matters concerning his greatest project, a statue of János Hunyadi. The sculptor brought the model back in 1855, and it was exhibited, but due to lack of funds the original plan was never realized. Döbrentei also mentions the case of the Berzsenyi bust (eventually brought back in 1850 and purchased by the poet’s son).
Of historical interest are his remarks on the situation of the capital under Austrian occupation: “On the walls of Buda Castle 8 cannons are aimed at Pest, they will fire when the Hungarian army from along the Tisza comes victorious to retake it.” Because of the uncertain situation he advises against returning home, suggesting instead: “Leave Rome in such a way that you may return there, when peace comes to the republic, or again to papal rule...”
