August Rieger was a Viennese landscape painter. He originally aspired to work as a priest, but broke off his theology studies and initially worked in the financial service. In his mid-thirties he began painting landscapes and joined the Hagenbund in 1938. His landscapes primarily depict views of Vienna and the surrounding area. Although he had no academic training and was self-taught, he was recognized as an artist by critics and colleagues and exhibited in art salons, especially in Vienna.
