In 1932 he moved to Vienna, where he continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna until 1940. There he studied under Anton Hanak and Josef Müllner. He also worked with Fritz Wotruba, whose work had a major influence on Leinfellner's work. In 1947 he was a founding member of the Art-Club. In 1957 he became a lecturer in ceramic sculpture at the Vienna Art Academy and from 1972 a professor. His works were repeatedly presented at national and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1954 and at the Documenta in Kassel in 1959.
