(Basel-Köln), 1513. (Adam Petri - Ludwig Hornken.) (4)+213+(27) fol(s). Title within ornamental woodcut border.
The author was an Italian theologian in the 12th century who, at the end of his life, was appointed bishop of Paris. His four-part work on theology is one of the most important texts of the period and was used as a textbook for several centuries. It has been published numerous times and was considered a fundamental work of Catholic theology until the 17th century.
Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards. Front cover with original metal cornerpieces, clasps lacking. Panels formed by fillet lines, every second field filled with floral roll tools. Central compartments stamped with fan-shaped tools (front) and vegetal ornaments (back). Rear board with surviving metal staple, evidence of earlier chained use. Crack at foot of spine.
