Der güt frum Lutherisch Pfaffen narr haysz ich Der mich kaufft der lesze mich.
(Augsburg, 1521. Erhard Oeglin Erben ny.) (7)p. With a nearly full-page woodcut on title.
In this work, the unknown author accuses church and secular leaders of arbitrariness. He argues that they do not take care of the spiritual and physical needs of those entrusted to them. The indictment is one of four works that originated in the castle of Franz von Sickingen Ebernburg, a mercenary leader who supported the Reformation. Several followers of Luther's teachings found refuge here, including Ulrich von Hütten, Eberlin von Günzburg, Johannes Kettenbach, Martin Butzer, and Hans Schweblin. Researchers suspect that the author of the work is among them. The beautiful woodcut is the work of Heinrich Vogtherr, a reworked version of Albrecht Dürer's illustration published in the Basel edition of "Narrenschiff". The work was published four times in the same year. In addition to this edition, another is known to exist in Augsburg (Jörg Nadler), one in Strasbourg and one in Erfurt.
Modern paper.
