FRÈRE ERIC DE TAIZÉ* (Geneva 1925 - 2007 Taizé)

Flight from Egypt
lithoraph/paper 10 x 10,8 cm
signed Eric Taizé, numbered 46/50

SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 20 - 30
STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 20

Eric de Saussure was born in Geneva as the son of Jean de Saussure. The father was a Reformed theologian and president of the Compagnie des pasteurs of the Geneva Reformed Church, who publicly denounced the deportation of Jews in Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Eric de Saussure studied art in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and in Florence at the Accademia delle Belle Arti from 1946. In Geneva he met Brother Roger's group of students who founded the Taizé Community during the war. In 1949 he joined the community as the 10th brother ("Frère Eric"). He lived not only in Taizé, but also in the fraternities of the Brethren, in Algeria in the early 1950s and in Hells's Kitchen in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. Friar Eric created paintings, stained glass windows, icons, engravings, but also book illustrations (especially his illustrated Bible) and sculptures. His oil paintings and and watercolours, his etchings, and glass works have significantly influenced the aesthetics of the Taizé Community. His window cycle on the south side of the Church of Reconciliation in Taizé, which symbolizes the Christian festivals, is particularly well known. The cross icon and the Marian icon in Taizé also go back to him. In addition to spiritual motifs, he also worked on landscape painting and abstract, monochrome representations. Further artists and styles: Stained glass, Albert Birkle, oil painting, watercolour, etching, Paul Duckert
PLEASE NOTE:
The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items.
The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
