The Schafbergbahn runs between St. Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut (542 m) and the Schafberg (1782 m). The valley station is in Upper Austria, the mountain station in the state of Salzburg. From 1862 to 1864, Wolfgang Grömmer, hotelier of the Weißen Rößl in St. Wolfgang, built the Hotel Schafbergspitze, the first mountain hotel in Austria, below the Schafberg summit. In 1889 the Kaiser Franz Joseph riding path was laid out with cement steps suitable for riding. The first projects for a railway to the Schafberg appeared at the same time as those for the Kahlenbergbahn. In 1872 Berthold Currant and Carl Peusens received a concession, which, however, could not be exploited due to the financial crisis of 1873. In 1890 the railway was licensed again for Stern & Hafferl from Gmunden, and after an announcement from the Ministry of Commerce on July 29, 1892 supplementing this document, the Salzkammergut-Localbahn-Actiengesellschaft (SKGLB) opened the local railway, designed as a “cogwheel railway”, on August 1, 1893. On September 30, 1906, the old mountain hotel building, which at the time was owned by the Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn-Aktien-Gesellschaft, burned down completely. After financial difficulties, the Schafbergbahn was sold to the Austrian Transport Office in 1932. In 1938 it passed to the Deutsche Reichsbahn and, after the Second World War, to the ÖBB. Salzkammergutbahn GmbH (SKGB), a subsidiary of Salzburg AG, has been operating the Schafbergbahn and the Wolfgangseeschifffahrt since 2006.
