Sylvain Vigny's early life story is largely unknown. He emigrated to France in the 1920s and spent the years from 1929 to 1934 in Paris before moving to Nice. There he exhibited in numerous galleries along the Côte d'Azur and in the Cannes Museum. He also presented his art in Switzerland and received public recognition when one of his paintings was purchased by the Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art. Although Vigny's works can be found in numerous French museums, he is still relatively unknown on the Austrian art scene. His works are appreciated in Paris and Nice for their striking views of Parisian streets, busy beach scenes and boulevards of the French Riviera, and expressive floral still lifes. To assess Vigny's specific aesthetic, one must consider the context of French and international modernism. There, numerous comparisons suggest themselves, such as with Vlaminck in Vigny's views of Montmartre, the dark colouring of Rouault or the lightness of Raoul Dufy's beach scenes. In 1961, a monograph on Vigny was published with texts by Jean Cassou and reproductions of his works as a portfolio.
