After studying philosophy and philology and spending five years as an actor in the ensemble of the Royal German State Theater in Prague, the Austrian painter, sculptor and ceramist Rudolf Raimund Ballebene turned to journalism and painting, especially landscape painting, after the First World War. During National Socialism, his works from the 1920s and 1930s were confiscated and are now considered almost completely lost. From 1943 Ballabene was banned from working. After the Second World War he settled in Vienna, where he quickly became known as an artist. From the mid-1960s onwards his works became more abstract. Ballabene was with Dr. Ernst Kovacs was a friend, public prosecutor and, in the 1960s, chief prosecutor in the Nazi criminal trials of Rajakowitsch, Novak and Verbelen. Dr. Kovacs is the father of actress Mijou Kovacs.
