János Pilinszky (1921-1981), poet. Four autograph, signed letters to István Siklós.
The recipient, poet and literary translator István Siklós, emigrated to England in 1956. He studied at the Department of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, later working with the BBC’s international broadcasts, where he became director of Hungarian-language programming in 1980. In 1964, together with Lóránt Czigány and Zoltán Szabó, he founded the Szepsi Csombor Literary Circle, an “independent cultural forum where Hungarian scholars and writers visiting London could meet their colleagues living in the West” (Hitel, 1991/21). Siklós was also among the first to translate Pilinszky into English.
Pilinszky travelled in Western Europe for six months in 1967, visiting England for the first time between July 30 and August 13.
Letter. Written from Paris after his London stay, addressed to Siklós and his wife Marietta. Pilinszky thanks them for “the friendly love with which you surrounded me during my stay in London.
