Full description

The complete series of the first independent Hungarian-language literary periodical. Representing the ideas of the noble reform movement, it addressed public issues as well as literature. Founded by the members of the Hungarian Society of Kassa—János Batsányi, Ferenc Kazinczy, and Dávid Baróti Szabó. Kazinczy withdrew after the second issue (to establish his own organ Orpheus).
Among the contributors and supporters were leading figures of the age, including György Aranka, Sándor Báróczi, Gábor Dayka, Gedeon Ráday, László Szentjóbi Szabó, Ferenc Verseghy, and Benedek Virág. Published quarterly in theory, though printing problems and editorial disputes meant that only eight issues appeared over five years. The first issue of vol. II was ready in 1790 but only distributed in 1792, the last quarter was issued in early 1793.
In vol. II appeared Batsányi’s perhaps most famous and influential poem „A franciaországi változásokra” (On the Changes in France), which probably contributed to the journal’s cessation, and later to the poet’s prosecution and condemnation. A work of major literary and cultural-historical significance, the complete series is exceedingly rare.
Contemporary half leather. Spine richly gilt.
