Full description

He reports the arrest of his son: “On the night of the 4th to 5th of this month, about 1 o’clock, József Eötvös, Royal Fiscal, accompanied by a captain, a sergeant, and numerous soldiers, arrested him in Zugliget, where he had been staying for a fortnight to treat his shoulder, and took him to the military barracks in Buda Castle. Around 4 a.m. the same persons also seized his papers and letters at his lodgings in Pest.”
Kossuth had been arrested for circulating the Törvényhatósági Tudósítások and was later convicted of high treason. His elderly father sent this circular to notify his son’s associates and warn them of possible danger. Owing to ill health (his trembling signature suggests this), he had the letter(s) drafted and dispatched by others.
