Karl Reißberger completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter and further trained as a graphic artist. He worked as a commercial artist before he was drafted into the Wehrmacht during the Second World War and was deployed as an officer in various theaters of war. After being seriously wounded in the summer of 1942, he served as an artillery instructor. In 1945, Reißberger returned to his original job and took over the management of the Donnhofer studio, which was particularly dedicated to the design of poster advertising and advertisements. From 1953, he worked as a teacher at the Berufsschule für graphische Gewerbe (vocational school for graphic arts) on Märzstraße, which he was director of from 1966 to 1980 held. Reißberger also worked as a freelance graphic artist and painter and created linocuts, woodcuts, etchings, watercolours and oil paintings. In the 1960s he created the Forte font and developed colour monotype as an artistic means of expression in printmaking. As a visual artist, he had his first major exhibition in 1956 as part of the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival), followed by several exhibitions at the Künstlerhaus, as a result of which he became a member of the Society of Fine Artists of Austria. His last personal exhibition took place in the postal savings bank office in 1982. In addition, he published important specialist publications, including the "ABC des Semperit-Gummitonplattenschnittes" (ABC of Semperit rubber plate cutting) (Vienna, Wiener Verlag 1951) and in particular "Schrift, Bild, Druck. Geschichte des Buches, Entwicklung der Schriften, Ziffern, Herstellung des Satzes, Reproduktionsphotographie, Druckformen, Druckverfahren, Bucheinband, Photographie, Druckgraphiken, Österreichs Druckergeschichte, Bibliotheksgeschichte, Österreichische Bibliotheken (Writing, image, printing. History of the book, development of fonts, numbers, production of typesetting, reproduction photography, printing forms, Printing processes, book binding, photography, prints, Austria's printing history, library history, Austrian libraries, Vienna, Österreichischer Gewerbeverlag 1977). Reißberger received numerous honors, including honorary membership of the Künstlerhaus (1976). His works are in numerous public institutions, museums and private collections at home and abroad. The Vienna Library in the town hall has been storing the artist and teacher's estate since 2012, including rare type and paper sample books.
