KAREL VALTER 1909 Ceske Budejovice Mlckov
1975, combined technique on cardboard, 42.5 x 49 cm, signed and dated lower right Valter K 75 and added in the author's hand Mlckov, framed Literature: Hynek Rulicek, Karel Valter obrazy (paintings), Ceske Budejovice, 1980; Nova encyklopedie ceskeho vytvarneho umeni (New Encyclopaedia of Czech Fine Art), Academia, Prague 1995, p. 894, Starting Price: CZK 12,000; USD 351; EUR 399, Estimated price: (14,000 - 18,000) CZK., Karel Valter, doyen of Czech painters is generally acknowledged as a landscape painter, but a very particular one, defying generally accepted ideas of this genre. His individual way of artistic expression is based mainly on abstract language of symbols taken from surrounding countryside, from its complex morphology and countless transformations through which it passes during the period of the yearly cycle. In other words, his paintings express the beauty of landscape in a complex artistic generalisation, which preserves individual landscape sections with only a general sensual similarity (T. Tetiva). Attention is thus paid mainly to the spiritual essence of a place, its metaphor and lyrical discharge issuing from it, all that has the power to create new reality from old, often using fantasy, awakened in the rare domain of a daydream.
