Johannes Fessl, who comes from the Waldviertel, studied from 1966 to 1970 at the Higher Graphic Teaching and Research Institute in Vienna. After graduating, he worked as a freelance painter, graphic designer and illustrator. Fessl moved to the Waldviertel in 1983, where he and his wife opened the Atelie Gallery in Wurmbrand near Groß Gerungs. Fessl's techniques included oil painting, oil tempera, tempera, watercolor, drawing, etching and woodcut. His favorite motifs included the Waldviertel and bizarre everyday scenes. After his sudden death, his life's work was continued by his wife and daughter in the Edition Zwettltal gallery.
