Friedrich König was an Austrian artist and illustrator. After attending the Vienna School of Applied Arts for two years, he was a student of Christian Griepenkerl at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1878 to 1883, then he went abroad. After his return to Vienna, he worked there as an illustrator for the 24-volume monumental work "Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild" (The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Images, Verlag der k. k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, 1885 - 1902). His focus was the decorative sector. There are only a few of his landscapes and monumental paintings in oil. König was initially a member of the Haagengesellschaft and in 1897 a founding member of the Secession, In 1939 he became a member of the Künstlerhaus. In 1943, the latter hosted an exhibition in his memory.
