A kötetben összesen 32 színezett, a halfajtákat részletesen, kidolgozottan ábrázoló metszet található, melyek természetes környetükben mutatják be a különböző halfajokat. Külön érdekessége, hogy a metszeteken a háttérben az adott területre jellemző hajófajtákat is ábrázolja. Sir William Jardine a Viktória-korabeli tudományos élet jelentős szereplője, a kor leglenyűgözőbb magánkézben lévő természettudományos gyűjteményének és könyvtárának tulajdonosa, emellett a természethistória széleskörő megismertetése is az ő nevéhez fűződik.
