Hondius, Henricus: America Septentrionalis
Amsterdam, 1636.
Copper-engraved map of North America by Henricus Hondius. The coastline is sufficiently mapped and accurate but includes the most influential geographical myth of the age: California as an island. The western areas are based on Henry Briggs’ America (1625), for the Gulf of Mexico and Florida, the work of Hessel Gerritsz was used, and the northern areas were inspired by De Laet and Thomas James. The engraver surrounded the ornate title cartouche with a group of armed native Americans and illustrated his work with vignettes of the continent’s native animals. Several sea monsters and galleys are placed on the oceans, and the lower cartouche remained empty (this identifies the rare, first state of the engraving as Jan Jansson’s name was added in this place in subsequent editions). Given the lack of explanatory text on the back of most copies, it is assumed that it was distributed as a separate sheet or as part of a composite atlas.
Dimensions: 465 x 550 (475 x 585) mm. Restored copy.
Burden: 245 (state 1.)., van der Krogt I.: 9100:1.1.
