Hans Böhler was an Austrian artist. Coming from a wealthy industrial family, he attended the Jaschke painting school in Vienna and briefly also the academy. Böhler came under the influence of the Secession early on, where he exhibited for the first time in 1908. He had been a member of the Neukunstgruppe since 1909 and maintained close contact with Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, whom he also supported through commissions and purchases. Böhler went on study trips lasting several months to Russia, Japan and China in 1910, and to South America in 1913 and to the USA, where he moved in 1936. In 1929, Schiele's supporter Arthur Rössler published a first monograph about Böhler, which was followed by several other publications and exhibitions. In 1934 Böhler became a member of the Vienna Secession, which dedicated a large exhibition to him in 1950. After his death in 1961 there were numerous retrospectives, including: in London, Vienna and Munich. Böhler's drawing presented here is strongly reminiscent of similar works by Gustav Klimt in terms of lines and conception of the figures.
