Gotthard Muhr (1939–2013) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, sculptor and university professor. He was born on December 30, 1939 in Schwanenstadt, Upper Austria, and studied from 1958 to 1964 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Christian Ludwig Martin and Max Melcher in the master class for painting and graphics. In 1964 he completed his studies as an academic graphic artist and painter and in 1965 he studied at the master school for medalist art under Ferdinand Welz. Muhr lived as a freelance artist in Vienna and Burgenland. He received the Austrian State Prize for Graphics in 1966 and represented Austria at, among other things, the São Paulo Biennale in 1975. From 1976 to 2000 he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, was a member of the board of the Vienna Secession (1983–1993) and played a key role in shaping the artistic realignment of the institution. His art reflects human conflict situations, violence and existential themes and shows influences from the expressionist tradition. He died on September 17, 2013 in Vienna.
