FRANZ MODLIK* (1902 - 1986)

Homestead with hay bales
charcoal/paper 11,5 x 18,5 cm
verso estate stamp

SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 50 - 100
STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 50

Franz Modlik was an Austrian Trotskyist activist of the interwar period. It is little known that, as a young man, Franz Modlik also emerged as a painter and draftsman in the 1920s. His preferred subject matter was workers oppressed by capitalism and marked by exploitation. In his work on visual artists of the interwar period, Christoph Bertsch counts Modlik as "part of the immediate circle of the communist leader Dr. Josef F[r]ey," one of the "most important representatives of the left-wing opposition within the Communist Party of Austria." Modlik's Bound Worker from 1927 was undoubtedly created under the immediate impression of the Palace of Justice fire. According to Bertsch, it is an "impressive depiction" of an oppressed worker "with his head thrown back, whose face suggests death." Further artists and styles: Realism, Expressionism, Secession, Hagenbund, woodcut
PLEASE NOTE:
The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items.
The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
