The first edition of Petőfi’s collected poems appeared on March 15, 1847, to wide acclaim at home and abroad. Reports noted that 3,000 copies were sold. Emich concluded a contract with the poet, acquiring perpetual rights for 1,500 pengő forints, ensuring that a second edition could be prepared and issued in February 1848. Életképek announced on February 6: “Petőfi’s complete poems have appeared at Gusztáv Emich’s, a fine second edition in two volumes. Price: 3 forints.”
Biographer Adolf Sennowitz distinguished two variants of this edition (see Emich Gusztáv, in Magyar könyvkereskedők évkönyve, 1892). The critical edition identifies a third variant, detailing all textual differences.
