Dora Kallmus (1881–1963), known as Madame d'Ora, was one of the most important Austrian photographers of the early 20th century and a pioneer of portrait and fashion photography. She was born in Vienna into a Jewish intellectual family and was one of the first women to train at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Graphic Arts Teaching and Research Institute). In 1907, she opened her first studio in Vienna and soon began photographing numerous personalities from the aristocracy, the arts and society, including Gustav Klimt, Josephine Baker and the Habsburg family. Her work was characterised by artistic intuition and a modern visual style, which attracted the attention of fashion houses such as the Wiener Werkstätte and later haute couture labels in Paris. From 1925 onwards, she lived and worked in Paris, photographing Parisian haute couture and international stars such as Tamara de Lempicka and Emilie Flöge. After the Nazi occupation of France, she was forced to go into hiding in the south of France, while many members of her family were deported and murdered. Her later work reflects these experiences and is characterised by a critical, often sombre visual language, for example in photographs of Parisian slaughterhouses. Dora Kallmus spent her twilight years in Frohnleiten (Styria), where she died in 1963. Further artists and styles: Theater photography, film photography, dance photography, society photography, fashion photography, Art Deco Photography, Jazz Age, nude photography, advertising photography, Madame d‘Ora, Arthur Benda, Edith Glogau, Trude Fleischmann
