(Róma, 1523. Francesco Minucio Calvo.) (16)p. Hieronymus Balbus (1465?-1535?) humanista tudós, költő, diplomata. Többször megfordult Magyarországon. 1501-1521 között itt élt, váci prépost és királyi titkár, majd egri őrkanonok, később pozsonyi prépost lett. II. Ulászló gyermekeinek, a későbbi II. Lajosnak és nővérének, Annának nevelője. Fontos diplomáciai megbízásokkal látták el. Legnagyobb jelentőségű a wormsi birodalmi gyűlésen a török és Luther ellen tartott nagyhatású szónoklata volt. A műben leírt beszédét 1523. február 9-én mondta el VI. Hadrián pápa előtt, Rómában, ahová Ferdinánd ausztriai főherceg követeként érkezett. Rhodosz és az egész keresztény világ védőbástyájának tekintett Belgrád elfoglalása kapcsán figyelmeztet arra, hogy Magyarország megvédése milyen fontos Németország és Itália biztonsága szempontjából is. A keresztény uralkodók összefogását és fellépését sürgeti a protestánsok és a török ellen, akiket egyformán veszélyesnek tartott. Kiemeli, hogy ennek megteremtésében milyen jelentős szerepet játszhat a pápa. Nagyhatású beszéde mégsem érte el a célját, sikertelenül távozott Rómából. Az oratio szövege néhány hónapon belül még kétszer megjelent Rómában. Későbbi félpergamen-kötésben. Apponyi: 168.; EDIT 116. (Le edizioni italiane del XVI. secolo. Roma, 1989.)

Speech delivered by the humanist author, who was at the time mediator in Rome on behalf of Archduke Ferdinand.
