Full description

Mezzotint view of the front of the National Theatre in Pest, by Domokos Perlaszka. Made in Pest, presumably immediately after the theatre opened. Definitely one of the earliest depictions of the building, but possibly the first. Citizens riding and walking can be seen in the foreground, as well as a carriage. The Hungarian coat of arms and the year "1837" appear below the image. A beautiful, sharp engraving. After lengthy preparations, the first stone theatre in Pest was finally built based on the plans of architect Mátyás Zitterbarth. Despite the historical significance of the theatre and the contemporary popularity of the engraver, we have not found references in the sources, nor have we traced any appearance at auction.
