Bessenyei, the leading figure of the so-called testőrírók (“bodyguard writers”), was one of the most significant representatives of the Hungarian Enlightenment. This pamphlet, issued without imprint, is one of his rarest works. The book consists of three parts: a study in the philosophy of history, an essay on human nature’s inclination to violence, and finally a literary-historical essay of great importance from the standpoint of cultural history. Written in the spirit of Enlightenment, this programmatic text advocates the creation of a secular Hungarian literature. To this end, it highlights as a key task the translation of French and English authors into Hungarian, making them known to the public. At the same time, it castigates the outdated and low-quality Hungarian literary tradition, naming only a few exceptions (e.g. Tinódi, Zrínyi, Gyöngyösi).
