Zsolnay Modern Hanging Plate
Wheel-thrown stoneware with hand-made patterns, surface covered in experimental glazes. Shape and decoration design: István Kovács, 1959-60. Marked on backside: under glaze, three-shields and five-towers branding stamped with green, under it, Made in Hungary in frame, and hand-written paper etiquette labels from factory, text on one: 9290/A (supposedly form number), on other: Kovács István Pécs. Zsolnay, Pécs, 1959-60. Diameter: 27 cm This was an indication that - partly due to the motivational power of traditions - the Pécs factory wanted to develop the production of ornamental pieces even despite the disadvantageous economic indicators. In the spirit of this intention, the experiments with eosin initiated by István Kovács, the Head Technologist of the Paint Department continued and proved to be a success. As a result, after reviving eosin technology and producing traditional eosin items, they developed the “tiger” (”zsugorrmáz”) “pea glaze” (”borsómáz”) technology, which was very modern at the time, and became a success with the audience.
