Vörösmarty 1838-ban írta az első pesti kőszínház részére e művét. Az Akadémia nagy jutalmában, 100 aranyban részesült. (A jutalom másik felét Balásházy János: A háztartás és mezei gazdaság tudománya c. munkája kapta.) 1838. május 19-én már be is mutatták a pesti színházban a szomorújátékot.
