1870-ben megjelent Vámbéry Ármin: Magyar és török-tatár szóegyezések című tanulmánya. Ezt az írást Budenz József, a pesti egyetem finnugor tanszékének vezetője kemény bírálattal illette. Vámbéry válaszul megírta A magyarok eredete c. könyvét, melyben a magyart török magvú" nyelvnek írta le, és harcot hirdetett a "mélyen meggyökerezett finn-ugor elmélet" ellen. Ezzel kezdetét vette a magyar nyelvtudomány máig tartó legnagyobb csatározása, az ún. ugor-török háború.
