Turcici Imperii imago
Contemporary coloured map of the Ottoman Empire by Jodocus Hondius, which first appeared in „Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes...” in 1606. Based on Gerard Mercator’s cartography because Hondius bought the plates of his heritage. This investment became his most successful decision as the monumental Mercator Atlas was published approximately in 50 editions during the 17th century. Later his sons — and after 1633, Jan Jansson, his son-in-law — took over the business and the reissuing of the atlas. The engraver placed a finely detailed cartouche for the title and scale in the lower left corner and illustrated his work with Sultan Mehmed III. French text on the back.
Dimensions: 360 x 485 (455 x 540) mm. With some stains, which not affect the map field.
