Portugália arany korszakában, a XVI. században a földrajzi felfedezések kiemelkedő hatalma volt, felfedező és kereskedő flottája a korábbi egyezmény jegyében elsősorban Afrika és Ázsia partjai mentén működött. A nagyotmondásairól közismert Fernao Mendes Pinto ázsiai útja 1537-1558 között zajlott, tengeri útjai során bejárta a portugál érdekszférához tartozó Mozambikot, Indiát, a hátsó-kelet-indiai szigetvilágot, Kínát, találkozott tatár, kínai és japán hatalmasságokkal, állítása szerint a belharcokkal dúlt Japánban ő szállt először partra az európai felfedezők közül, mi több, a muskéta fegyverét is ő mutatta be a japán harcászat számára. Fantasztikus részletekben, jogi, kormányzati, néprajzi megfigyelésekben gazdag beszámolóját hazatérése után, 1569-től vetette papírra, ám a mű csak szerzője halála után, 1614-ben jelent meg. A beszámoló első angol fordítása 1653-ban jelent meg. A mű modern sorozatkiadásához Vámbéry Ármin Ázsia-kutató írt előszót. (The Adventure Series.) Aranyozott, dombornyomásos, enyhén sérült kiadói egészvászon kötésben. Jó példány.
