Terrae Sanctae quae Promissionis terra, est Syriae pars ea, quae Palaestina vocatur, descriptio, per Tylmannu Stellam.
Strangely oriented – with northwest at the top –, rare map of the Holy Land, published in the extremely unique first edition of Gerard de Jode’s „Speculum Orbis Terrae”. Based on the 1566 map of Tilemann Stella (Stolz). The nomenclature is detailed, but the coastline between Tirus and Beersheba and the crescent shape of the Dead Sea are quite irregular. The map is beautifully decorated by the engravers, Jan and Lucas van Deutecum. A finely detailed cartouche, a compass rose (with labelled directions), several galleons and aquatic animals as well as two well-known places (the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Chapel of the Nativity in Bethlehem) and the detailed view of Jerusalem at the lower right corner are depicted. The pictures are based upon Fernando Bertelli’s work. Latin text and a Roman number (IX) as table identifier on the back.
Dimensions: 310 x 515 (420 x 565) mm. Fine, clear copy.
