Somogyi József Kossuth-díjas magyar szobrászművész, az 1945 utáni hazai figuratív szobrászat kiemelkedő alakja. Művészeti pályáját korán kezdte, és állatszobraival már a 1940-es években figyelmet keltett. Monumentális alkotásai, mint a Martinász (1960, Dunaújváros) erős expresszivitásról, mély érzelmi töltetről és átgondolt szerkesztettségről tanúskodnak. Kisplasztikái is kiemelkedők, például a Cantata Profana. Somogyi a természetelvű ábrázolás mellett mélyen humanista szemléletet képviselt, amely visszaköszönt köztéri szobraiban és érméiben egyaránt. Élete során többek között Tihanyban, a Belső-tó partján alkotott művésztelepet, hogy tehetséges fiatalokat támogasson
