A finnugor-magyar nyelvhasonlítás első jelentős kísérlete! Sajnovics János (1733-1785) csillagász, a magyar nyelvtudomány kiemelkő alakja. Bécsben volt csillagász, amikor a dán királyi udvar meghívására Északra utazik, ahol „mellesleg” elkezdi kutatni a lapp és finn népek történetét és nyelvét. Tanulmánya először 1770-ben jelent meg Koppenhágában. Bár az 1771-es nagyszombati megjelenés az első kiadásnál valamivel gyakoribb, ez is rejt művelődéstörténeti érdekességet: itt jelent meg először nyomtatásban a Pray György által 1770-ben felfedezett Halotti beszéd és könyörgés szövege.
