Ruscelli, Girolamo Anglia et Hibernia Nova
Venice, 1574.
Outline-coloured, copper engraved, second state map of the British Isles, published in Ptolemy’s Geographia by Girolamo Ruscelli in 1574. Ruscelli – and his contemporary, Gastaldi – marked a turning point in the history of cartography by using copper as the medium of their cartographic works as it was a more rigid material than wood. It gave the engraver the ability to render more details and allowed more copies to be made. Italian text with a woodcut initial on the back.
With a stain at the lower right corner and a small tear at the folding.
