A vándorló Merkur, Pietro Rossini kis könyve a Rómába látogató külföldiek figyelmét célozza meg. Az akár zsebben is hordható munka elrendésének eredetiségével tűnik ki. A három részre osztott első rész a palotákat és kincseiket mutatja be, különösen hasznos információkkal a római magángyűjtemények történetéhez, a második a villákra és kertekre, a harmadik Róma régiségeire koncentrál, melynek végén a város kilenc főtemplomának rövid leírása található. Az első kiadás 1693-ban jelent meg, és gyorsan nagyon népszerűvé vált, alig száz év alatt tíz új kiadás látott napvilágot. Ezek mindegyike frissült a nemrégiben épült épületekkel és a tulajdonosi változásokkal. 1700 után egy fejezettel egészítettek ki a művet. A könyvet Giovani Piranesi, Jean Legeay, Amidei Fausto és Giovanni Barbiellini metszetei illusztrálják.
