The painter and graphic artist Ferdinand Dorsch initially devoted himself to romantic themes and genre paintings and, as he developed, he adopted an impressionistic style of painting. From 1891 to 1898, he studied at the Dresden Art Academy with L. Pohle and F. Pauweis and from 1895 in the master studio with G. Kuehl. From 1898 to 1901, Dorsch lived in Vienna, from 1901 he had his permanent residence in Dresden. In 1902, he was a founding member of the Dresden artists' association “Elbier”, which performed as a guest at the Hagenbund in 1906. In 1907, Dorsch took part in the 7th Venice Biennale with two oil paintings. In 1902 he was represented in the Hagenbund for the first time, and from 1903 to 1912, he was a member of the Hagenbund. From 1906 he ran a private painting school in Dresden (K. Felixmüller was one of his students). In 1914 Dorsch was appointed professor at the Dresden Art Academy, In 1926/1927 and from 1935, he worked as its rector. In the catalog for the Hagenbund exhibition in Košice in 1922, Dorsch was listed as a “rural member”, However, he did not exhibit. He had numerous exhibitions in Germany (Munich, Dresden, Mannheim, Düsseldorf, etc.), and in 1935 he had a large special exhibition in Berlin. Works by his hand include: in the collections of the Nationalgalerie Berlin, the Galerie Neue Meister Dresden, the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig, the Chemnitz Art Collection and the Bautzen Museum. Honours, prizes (selection): 1904 gold medal at the major art exhibition in Dresden, 1909 Gold Medal International Art Exhibition Munich, 1913 Bronze Medal London (Crystal Palace), 1914 WASA Order 1st Class (Sweden), 1918 Knight's Cross of the Order of Albrecht (Saxony).
