Robert Russ, a member of the circle of friends around Emil-Jakob Schindler, Eugen Jettel and Rudolf Ribarz, was a student at the Vienna Academy in Albert Zimmermann's landscape class from 1861 to 1868. In 1870/71, he represented his teacher as a professor. He made numerous trips to Germany, Holland, Belgium and above all to Italy. Russ regularly took part in exhibitions and received every award possible for an artist in Austria by 1891. Russ was also successful internationally. For example, he was represented with five pictures at the 1873 World Exhibition. In the 1880s, he created numerous commissioned pictures for well-known museums. From the mid-1890s he found his motifs mainly in South Tyrol and Lake Garda. From 1900 until his death there followed a long productive period and the intensification of international exhibition activity. Russ used a sketchy style to create his mature work, which is now one of the most sought-after works in Austrian landscape and mood painting. For over twenty years, the area around Arco and Riva on Lake Garda was a source of inspiration for Russ, which earned him the reputation of a "master of lighting effects" during his lifetime. Further artists and styles: Emil Jakob Schindler, August von Pettenkofen, Carl Moll, Josef Stoitzner, Rudolf Ribarz, Karl Hofmann, Theodor von Hörmann, Hugo Darnaut, Ludwig Halauska, Eugen Jettel, Robert Russ, Tina Blau, Olga Wisinger-Florian, Marie Egner, Marie Arnsburg, Anna Boch, Hippolyte Boulenger, Évariste Carpentier, Emile Claus, Théo van Rysselberghe, James Ensor, Félicien Rops, Alfred Stevens, Jenny Montigny, Georges Lemmen, Otto Antoine, Lovis Corinth, Hans Dieter, Louis Eysen, Philipp Franck, Theodor Hagen, Karl Hagemeister, Thomas Herbst, Curt Hermann, Friedrich Kallmorgen, Paul Klimsch, Gotthardt Kuehl, Max Liebermann, Ernst Oppler, Leo Putz, Richard Pietzsch, Hermann Pleuer, Max Slevogt, Robert Sterl, Wilhelm Trübner, Frédéric Bazille, Gustave Caillebotte, Mary Cassatt, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Armand Guillaumin, Édouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Lizzy Ansingh, Albertus Gerardus Bilders, George Hendrik Breitner, Paul Gabriel, Vincent van Gogh, Jozef Israëls, Isaac Israëls, Jacob Maris, Matthijs Maris, Willem Maris, Anon Mauve, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Piet Mondrian, Suze Robertson, Eduard Ameseder, Gustav Bamberger, Wilhelm Bernatzik, Ferdinand Brunner, Liesel Czech, Hugo Darnaut, Adolf Ditscheiner, Josef Engelhart, Alexander Demetrius Goltz, Anton Hlavacek, Josef Jungwirth, Rudolf Jung, Maximilian Kahrer, Lisl Kinzel, Gustav Klimt, Friedrich König, Heinrich Lefler, Thomas Leitner, Eduard von Lichtenfels, Karl Mediz, Emilie Mediz-Pelikan, Karl von Merode, Hans Ranzoni, Ludwig Rösch, Franz Rumpler, Karl Schindler, Eduard Schleich, Ferdinand Schmutzer, Gustav Schütt, Stefan Simoni, Siegfried Stoitzner, Anton Josef Storch, Karl-Ludwig Strauch, Emil Strecker, Maximilian Suppantschitsch, Rudolf Weber, Otto Wild, Fritz Zerritsch, Eduard Zetsche, Alfred Zoff, Barbizon, Plein air Malerei, Secession, Jahrhundertwende, Hevesi, Albert Zimmermann, Dresden, Belvedere, Knokke, Dachau, Tirol, Ötztal, Pitztal, Symbolismus
