Full description

PHILIPPE HALSMAN* (Riga 1906 - 1979 New York)

Society matron Mrs. Clapp, around 1960
gelatin silver print 25,3 x 20,3 cm
verso photographer's stamp

SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 250 - 500
STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 250

Halsman turned his childhood hobby, photography, into a career and opened a photo studio in Paris in 1931. He soon became known for his portraits and fashion photos. Halsman immediately worked as a press and fashion photographer and was apparently so successful that the following year he got a permanent position at Life magazine, the pinnacle of photojournalism at the time. In 1945, Halsman was appointed President of the American Society of Magazine Photographers. Halsman‘s 1947 portrait of Albert Einstein is unsurpassed and still widely known today. The exceptional quality of his images is also demonstrated by the fact that Halsman delivered such good pictures for over 20 years that a total of 103 of his photos served as covers for the weekly magazine Life, more than any other photographer. His specialty was his „Jump Pictures“ of politicians and public figures, which he realized in 1959. Further artists and styles: Marilyn Monroe, Albert Einstein, Salvador Dali, Jumpology, surrealist photography
PLEASE NOTE:
The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items.
The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
