A szerző a Francia Köztársaság utolsó szentpétervári nagykövete volt.
A szarajevói merénylet előestéjétől 1914. július 20-ától fogva 1917. május 17-ig vezetett naplót.
Emlékirataiban bemutatja az orosz „anciem rezsim” utolsó éveit, a nyomorúság és fényűzés, a besúgórendszer,
a cári titkosrendőrség az Ohrana tevékenységét.
