The German-Austrian painter Oskar Gawell was born in Chawłodno near Gollanz or Gollantsch in the Prussian province of Posen, now Poland. From 1909 to 1912 he studied at the art academies in Breslau and Weimar. During this time, the painter also maintained close contact with the artists of the “Brücke”. From 1924 onwards, Gawell undertook a number of study trips, which took him, among other things, led to Lithuania, Russia, Romania, Poland, Finland, Holland, Italy, Spain and North Africa. From 1909 to 1912, he studied at the academies in Breslau and Weimar. In 1913/14, he was a student of Lovis Corinth in Berlin. At the first exhibition of the Free Secession Berlin in 1914, he was featured with works alongside Max Oppenheimer, Max Pechstein, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro and others. represent. During this time he had close contact with the artists on the bridge. During the First World War he served as an infantryman. In 1926, he was awarded the Albrecht Dürer Prize by the city of Nuremberg. From Weimar he went on painting trips to the Nidden artists' colony on the Curonian Spit, where he is said to have painted repeatedly in the 1920s. In 1926, he worked in Positano. He was, among other things, friends with Marc Chagall and Oskar Kokoschka and exhibited in Zwickau in 1927 together with Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. In 1929 he traveled by ship from Holland to Algiers and from Königsberg to Finland. In 1931, he stayed in Masuria. Study trips to Belgium, Italy, Spain and Romania followed. In 1935, he had an exhibition with Grete Csaky-Copony at the kidney village gallery. From 1928 to 1933, Gawell held a professorship at the State Art School in Berlin, which he lost due to National Socialist cultural policy. From 1937, he spent more time in Vienna, where he was registered from 1940. In 1947, he also received Austrian citizenship, and in 1949 he was awarded the title of professor by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education. Gawell was a member of the German Artists' Association, the Berlin Secession and the Vienna Secession.
