In 1964 he and Heinz Geretsegger published the monograph "Otto Wagner 1841–1918. Unbegrenzte Großstadt, Beginn der modernen Architektur" at Residenz Verlag. In 1969, he published his first drawings under the title "Sechs Beiträge zur Zukunft: Technik- und Zivilisationskritik unter dem Deckmantel der Utopie". In 1972, Peintner was represented with works in the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. In 1977, documenta 6 showed his work. In 1986 he and Karl Prantl represented Austria at the Biennale di Venezia. Peintner's works were shown in solo and group exhibitions, among others, in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (1982), in the Rupertinum in Salzburg (1985/1986), in the Museion in Bozen (1989) and shown in the Ludwig Kortárs Művészeti Múzeum in Budapest (1996/1997). The Neue Galerie Graz dedicated a retrospective to him in 2000. A pencil drawing by Peintner from 1974 is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Peintner's work "Die ungebrochene Anziehungskraft der Natur" (1970/71) was the starting point for the art project For Forest (Klagenfurt 2019).
