Szent-Györgyi Albert 1927-től az 1930-as évek elejéig tartózkodott Cambridge-ben, itt ismerkedett össze a kötet szerzőjével, az abban az időben a Cambridge-i Egyetemen Edgar Douglas Adrian elektrofiziológus segédjeként működő Bryan Matthews-zal.
