Magyarországra a kolerát sószállító tutajosok hurcolták be Galícia felől. Az első esetet 1831. június 13-án Tiszaújlakon Bugát Pál kerületi orvosi koleratanácsadó diagnosztizálta. A járvány néhány hónap alatt szinte az egész országra kiterjedt. Lenhossék Mihály országos főorvos aukciónkon is szereplő, 1831. szeptember 26-án kiadott tájékoztató köriratában részletesen beszámolt a betegség járványtani sajátosságairól és a betegség gyógyítása terén addig szerzett tapasztalatokról. „A főgyógymód az érvágás, enyhe sósavas higacs és mákony adagolása.” Kórbonctani oktatás még nem volt és az orvosok a megejtett boncolások révén nem tudták tisztázni a kolera kórtanát. még kevésbé voltak tisztában a betegség gyógykezelésével. A kolerajárvány tartama alatt: 1831. június 13-tól hivatalos megszűnéséig, 1832. május 22-ig összesen 536 517 egyén betegedett meg és ezek közül meghalt 237 641 ember, tehát több mint 40 %.
