Kossuth törökországi tartózkodása/fogsága után 1851 október 23-án érkezett Angliába, Southamptomba, ahonnan a hónap végén Londonba ment. A kötet a Southapmtonban elmondott 3 beszédét (okt. 23, 25, 28), valamint a Londonban tartott beszédeit (okt. 30, nov 3, 11, 12, 13) tartalmazza. Az 1848/49-es szabadságharc páratlanul ritka dokumentuma.
