At the end of 1808, Kisfaludy was commissioned by the Palatine to write a pamphlet encouraging the noble insurrection against Napoleon. The result, „Hazafiúi szózat a magyar nemességhez” (Patriotic Appeal to the Hungarian Nobility), appeared the following year in Hartleben’s edition with a print run of 3000 copies. On February 26, 1809, the poet sent the manuscript to Count Beckers, the Palatine’s aide-de-camp, and at the same time dispatched a copy to his old friend and printer Sághy, accompanied by this letter. At the beginning he explains what prompted him to write the piece and asks for a cost estimate. He then devotes nearly a full page to detailed instructions regarding the printing. The letter concludes with a harsh judgment of the nobility: "Believe me, my dear Friend, I am ashamed and pained when I find the Hungarian nobility soft, indolent, and petty of heart and soul, just as its very existence – its life or death – hangs in the balance. My little work, if only the Censorship deems it permissible, will be very necessary, and may indeed prove useful to my compatriots." The letter is published in Albert Gárdonyi’s article „KisfaludySándor és az insurrectio” (Sándor Kisfaludy and the Insurrection – Irodalomtörténeti Közlemények. 1927. p. 92-93.)
